African folklore and parental stresses combine in effective fashion In Nikyatu Jusu's film, which stars Anna Diop as Aisha, a Senegalese immigrant who takes a job looking after a young girl for a wealthy Manhattan couple. But in Onward, the fantastical, Tolkien-lite elements are mixed with more banal workaday realities. Yet its true strength is in how it portrays the love between brothers, which brings its own kind of magic. One of Pixar’s most profound abilities has always been confronting the bittersweet along with the purely sweet and funny, in stories that kids and parents can watch together — and Onward delivers on that promise. Karim Aïnouz’s lush melodrama won awards at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and was highly lauded by critics, who praised its emotional storytelling and striking images. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie, the movie is now available to stream on Prime Video. Emily Blunt (wife of writer/director John Krasinski, who understandably does not have much to do onscreen this time around) carries this one like the star she is, but it is Millicent Simmonds, playing her deaf daughter, who gives it true heart. Well, at least for now, it means that movies are coming to streaming a hell of a lot quicker, and if you don’t mind sacrificing the theatrical experience, that might be a good thing. No more waiting six months to catch the latest blockbuster; no more wishing you lived near a big city so you could see the film festival sensation all the critics are buzzing about.
The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
Gina Prince-Bythewood's action thriller The Old Guard is more than just your ordinary shoot-'em-up-bang-bang-style popcorn flick. The pic stars Charlize Theron as Andy, the ancient leader of a race of semi-immortals who secretly work to save the world, one fight at a time, and take on a reluctant new member in KiKi Layne's Nile. It's an odd choice to finish a trilogy 29 years after the second film, but William S. Preston and Theodore Logan are wrapping up their excellent time-traveling adventures in Bill & Ted Face the Music, the first movie in the series since 1991.

It’s inspiring, hopeful, and vital viewing for anyone who cares about democracy. The Other Lamb recalls everything from The Witch and The Handmaid’s Tale to Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie. But what makes The Other Lamb feel fresh is how Szumowska renders her world — in vivid colors and inky blacks, with slow zooms that turn their placid, pastoral lives into something uncanny. Chilly, precisely designed scenes make for a sharp juxtaposition with images of blood, violence, and birth. This is the future every millennial raised on The Parent Trap — and the Disney Channel Original movie Life-Size starring Tyra Banks — has manifested. Lohan plays a hotel heiress who, after a skiing accident, loses her memory and must live amongst the peasants of a snowy mountain town. While there she bonds with a sheriff/single-dad played by Glee’s Chord Overstreet and, presumably, realizes her former life wasn’t as picture perfect as she thought. And it's not just a black-and-white arthouse film from Germany starring a clown in a tutu that we're talking about. Major blockbuster movies are getting their big opening nights on TVs as the industry reconsiders the way we watch films, with one of the biggest studios, Warner Bros., already deciding to stream its entire 2021 slate on HBO Max.
But the takeaway from the pic -- apart from the fact that Delroy Lindo delivers a tour-de-force performance -- is that it sheds light on another oft-unrecognized sacrifice and segment of our nation's history.
